An acid which, combined with soda, forms borax, or borate of soda. As obtained by the action of sulphuric acid upon a solution of borax, it is in the form of thin irregular hexagonal scales, of a silvery whiteness, having some resemblance to spermaceti, and the same greasy feel. By fusion, it is converted into a hard transparent glass, which is used in the composition of false gems.
