Two cups white sugar, 1 cup butter, 1 cup milk, 3 1/2 cups flour, 2 teaspoons cream tartar, 1 teaspoon soda or 2 teaspoons baking powder, whites of 6 eggs, well beaten. Flavoring.
One cup red sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1-3 cup milk, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon cream tartar, 1/2 teaspoon soda, or 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, yolks of 6 eggs, 1 cup Sultana raisins (whole). Bake in large round pan. Cut a piece of plain stiff paper 3 inches wide by 22 inches long. Grease both sides. Pin ends together. Place in center of pan. Turn red part inside circle made by paper. Turn white part outside circle. Remove paper carefully, using knife. Bake at once.
Two cups sugar, 1 cup butter, 1 cup milk, 3 cups flour, 1 cup chopped walnuts, 1 cup ground chocolate, 1 cup mashed potatoes, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon each of cinnamon, cloves and allspice, 5 eggs. Cream the sugar and butter; add eggs well beaten. Put nuts, spices, baking powder, and chocolate into flour. Add to sugar, butter and eggs. Add potatoes last.
Two-thirds cup butter, 2 cups granulated sugar, 2 cups flour, 1 cup hot mashed potatoes, 1/2 cup sweet milk, 4 eggs, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 cup chocolate, 1 cup chopped walnuts, 1 teaspoon each of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cream butter and sugar; then add yolks of eggs; then milk, potatoes, spices and chocolate. Sift baking powder into flour. Beat white of eggs stiff and add the nuts just before putting into pan. Bake 1 hour in an oven not too warm until the cake loosens from the edge of the pan.
3/4 cup milk, 2 cups sugar, butter size of an egg. Boil until it strings, then beat.
