Butter, 1/2 cup. Sugar, 1 cup. Egg, 1.
Sour milk, 1 cup. Maple syrup, 1/2 cup.
Flour, 2 cups. Soda, 1/2 teaspoon. Baking powder, 2 teaspoons. Cinnamon, 1 1/2 teaspoons. Clove, 1/2 teaspoon.
Mix ingredients in order given and bake in a loaf in a moder-ate oven.
Butter, 1/2 cup. Powdered sugar, 1 cup. Flour, 1 1/2 cups. Cream of tartar, 1 teaspoon.
Soda, 1/2 teaspoon. Salt, a pinch. Water, 1/2 cup. Citron, 1 cup.
Egg whites, 2.
Cream the butter and sugar. Sift in dry ingredients, add water, citron shredded fine and dredged with flour, and lastly fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in one loaf.
Sugar, 1 1/2 cups.
Melted butter, 3 tablespoons.
Eggs, 2.
Cinnamon, 2 tablespoons.
Clove, 1 teaspoon. Stewed prunes, 2 cups. Sifted flour, 2 cups. Soda, 1 teaspoon.
Stew prunes in just enough water to cover, then mash and use prunes and water in which they were cooked in measuring. Mix in order given and bake in layer cake tins. Put together with whipped cream. Mrs. T. A., Medford.
Sugar, 1 cup. Butter, 1/2 cup. Milk, 1/2 cup. Egg, 1.
Nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon. Cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon. Vinegar, 1 tablespoon. Soda, 1/2 teaspoon.
Flour.
Cream butter and sugar, add milk and beaten egg, soda dissolved in the vinegar, and cinnamon and nutmeg sifted with enough flour to make consistency of cake dough.
Honey, 1 cup. Sugar, 1 cup. Melted butter, 1/2 cup. Eggs, 2.
Flour, 1 pint. Sour milk. 1 cup. Soda, 1 teaspoon. Mace, 1 teaspoon.
Mix together in order given and bake in moderate oven 30 to 35 minutes. Mrs. B. N. K., Bingham,.
Flour, 2 cups. Bread crumbs, 1 cup. Egg, 1. Raisins, 1 cup.
Sugar, 1 cup.
Butter, 1/2 cup.
Baking powder, 1 teaspoon.
Mixed spices.
Milk, 1/2 cup.
Mix and sift flour, sugar, baking powder and spices to taste Rub in the butter, add bread crumbs, beaten egg and milk. Flour the raisins and stir in last.
Butter, 1/2 cup. Sugar, 1 cup. Salt, a pinch. Eggs, 2.
Dry cocoa, 3 tablespoons. Sour milk, 1/2 cup. Soda, 1/2 teaspoon. Vanilla, 1 teaspoon.
Flour, 1 1/2 cups.
Melt butter and cream with sugar, add salt, eggs, beaten, and ingredients in order given dissolving soda in sour milk. Bake in muffin tins and frost with white frosting. Egleston Square.
Powdered sugar, 2 cups. Butter, 1/2 cup. Milk, 1/2 cup.
Flour, 2 1/2 cups.
Baking powder, 2 1/2 teaspoons.
Egg whites, 8.
Almond extract, 1/2 teaspoon.
Cream the butter and sugar, add milk, then the flour and baking powder sifted together, the whites of the eggs beaten stiff and the extract. Bake in layers and put together with the follow-ing frosting:
Water, 1/2 cup. Sugar, 3 cups. Egg whites, 3.
Almond extract, 1/2 teaspoon.
Cocoanut.
Blanched almonds.
Boil sugar and water till it will spin a thread, then pour slowly onto the stiffly beaten egg whites, beating constantly. Add the extract and keep on beating till the right consistency to spread. Pour over layers and sides of cake, sprinkle entire surface with shredded cocoanut and decorate with halves of blanched almonds, about the edge of the cake.
