A New Jersey correspondent writes: "What has gotten over the clovers this season? My daughter found this morning in about three-quarters of an hour 25 four-leaf clovers and 10 with five leaves. Is not this very unusual? Is it probably caused by an excess of vitality arising from the damp season?"

[No one knows why a clover sometimes has four leaflets. The moist season will scarcely account for it, for the four-leaved condition is not more common in the moist climate of England than in America. The fact is, that Nature is, like other young ladies, not always willing to furnish a reason for what she does. "When she will, she will, and when she won't, she won't," is about as near to a reason for some things as we can get to it.-Ed. G. M].
