"Virginia:" We believe it is conceded that an ancient Roman would have pronounced the word with accent on the first syllable, but custom with the English speaking people has placed it upon the second, and " it is custom gives law to language." It would be no use to try to change it now. As to culture, it is conceded to be difficult to transplant, but this is probably because it is forgotten that its leading root fibres are near the surface. If planted where an abundance of light, sandy soil can get in among the fine fibres, it will perhaps do better.
