Horticultural Picnic At Cincinnati

We have received a very polite invitation to be present at the Horticultural Gathering at Mr. Buchanan's, for which he and his associates will please accept our sincere thanks. Being unable, from illness and other causes, to attend, our friends may at least rely on our spiritual presence, as well as our best wishes for them individually and the cause to which they are devoted.

A Horticultural Pnn

Sir George Rose being introduced one day to two charming young ladies, whose names were Mary and Louise, he instantly added, with a bow, "Ah, yes! Marie Louise, the sweetest pear I know;" a compliment almost worthy of being coupled with that most beautiful one of Sydney Smith, suggested by the Sweet Pea. A young lady walking with him in the garden, paused to examine a favorite flower, on which she had taken great pains. "I am afraid, Mr. Smith," she said, "that this pea will never come to perfection." "Then allow me," taking her politely by the hand, "to lead perfection to the pea."

Horticultural Societies

The New York Horticultural Society is making some effort to establish some sort of an experimental garden. In their proceedings they speak of it as a "Horticultural Garden." We presume it is intended to be something like Chiswick to the London Horticultural Society; we hope they will succeed. The wealthy citizens of New York should give it their countenance and support freely and liberally, that the great commercial metropolis may have a horticultural institution worthy of her. The costliness of dwellings, hotels, restaurants, places of amusement, dress, modes of living, etc., knows no hounds in New York, and has no parallel any where. Will they do nothing for horticulture but purchase bouquets ? * We shall see.
