Chloroform by Inhalation. - Rules to be Observed.

1. The patient should fast for three hours before the inhalation.
2. Twenty minutes before inhalation a dose of brandy should be given in water.
3. Let the patient be in the recumbent position.
4. Let the chest and neck be well exposed.
5. The pulse and respiratory movements should be carefully watched, and also the color of the cheeks, lips and eyes.
6. Administer the chloroform gradually, and if a handkerchief is used, hold it at least an inch from the mouth, and put not more than fifteen or twenty minims upon it at one time.+
So long as there is contraction of the pupil, and irritation of the conjunctiva causes reflex action, and is followed by winking, there is no danger.
