Origin. - A volatile oil distilled from the fresh leaves of Eucalyptus globulus Labillardiere and from other sources.
Description and Properties. - A colorless or faintly yellowish liquid, having a characteristic, aromatic, somewhat camphoraceous odor and a pungent, spicy, and cooling taste. Soluble in all proportions in alcohol. This oil consists of a mixture of hydrocarbons, the most striking of which is eucalyptol, probably identical with cineol, C10H18O, one of the most widely distributed of the oxides of the hydrocarbons. It should be kept in well-stoppered bottles, in a cool place, protected from light.
Dose. - 5 - 15 minims (0.3-1.0 Cc.) [8 minims (0.5 Cc), U. S. P.].
