If you are interested in garden work, you will need a rack of some kind for keeping the various garden tools, such as the spading fork, rake, hoe, a hand weeder, trowel, pruning shears, etc. A rack like the one shown, not only furnishes a place for these articles, but will do much to keep them in good condition.
This model is simple in construction and can be made out of any workable wood, such as lumber from a discarded packing case or common building material.
Before starting a project of this kind, you should decide on the number and kind of tools you wish to keep on such a rack. The design shown includes space for most of the tools commonly used by all garden workers.
Step No. 1: Cut out a piece of wood thick, 8" wide and about 8' long. If you do not have one piece this size, simply use two or more pieces so as to give you the required length board.
Step No. 2: Lay off where you intend boring the holes to receive the dowels, which are used for supporting the tools.
Step No. 3: Bore holes 1/2" in diameter at the places marked off. Use a No. 8 auger bit and brace for this work. These holes should be bored at a slight angle so as to prevent the tools from sliding off the pegs.
Step No. 4: Cut pieces of 1/2" dowel rod 5" long; slightly whittle the tops round.
Step No. 5: Use any good prepared glue and securely glue all pegs in place.
Step No. 6: In the spaces between the pegs, put in screw cup hooks or common screw hooks. These hooks will come in handy for hanging up the smaller tools, such as the trowel, hand weeder, pruning shears, etc.
Step No. 7: So as to keep the moisture out of the wood and give some finish to this project, apply a liberal coat of boiled linseed oil, or any oil stain you may select. Wipe off the surplus oil or stain with a cloth.
Step No. 8: Fasten this rack to some wall that is convenient to your garden. Use 11/2" No. 10 common wood screws for this purpose.
