Claudius Aelianus, a writer of the early part of the 3d century, born at Prameste in Italy. His compilation, generally known under the Latin title Varia Historia, is still extant, as well as an original treatise De Animalium Natura. These works are written in Greek, of which the author, though an Italian by birth, was a perfect master.
