Birket Foster, an English artist, born at North Shields in 1812. At the age of 16 he was placed with Mr. Landells, a wood engraver, by whom he was advised to turn his attention to drawing rather than engraving. His carvings on wood, especially of landscapes and forest scenes, are among the best modern productions in that department of art. For some years he has successfully devoted himself to painting in water colors, but without wholly abandoning drawing upon wood for engravers.
