[A contraction of "Godsummer," a name given by our superstitious ancestry to the fine filmy cobwebs which float in the air in summer time, so-called because these flying webs were considered as being the shreds and remnants of the Virgin Mary's shroud which she dropped to earth on her ascension to heaven] A variety of gauze, softer and stronger than the ordinary kind, much used for veils. Also a thin, water-proof outer wrap, worn especially by women. [See Gauze]
