If you live in the suburbs, you will want a box that can be kept outdoors so that the milkman and baker can deliver their wares to you and place them in a weather tight box. A box of this kind, also comes in very handy for receiving all small parcels when you are out.

Make this simple project out of some discarded soap box or the like, that is made of wood about 1/2" thick. A good size to make this model is 8" wide, 13" high and 16" long.

If however, you wish to use this box a great deal for receiving fairly large parcels, I would then suggest making the model quite some larger.

Method Of Procedure

Step No. 1: Make this box by nailing the two side pieces on to the end pieces. Then nail the bottom in place. Use 11/4" common wire nails for this work.

Step No. 2: The cover should be hinged in place and if you like, fasten a simple catch to the other edge so that the cover can be held down tightly. To prevent the cover from warping, it will be well to fasten cleats (wood strips) across the under side; it is best to fasten these pieces in place with screws.

Milk And Bread Box

Step No. 3: Since this box must withstand all kinds of weather, it should be finished by applying three coats of a good outside oil paint in any color you prefer. Carefully follow the directions given on the can. If you prefer, mix your own paint; the job is not a difficult one. Use about one-half turpentine, one-half raw linseed oil and a little drier for the first coat; use less turpentine and more linseed oil for the second coat with a little drier and on the last coat, use the linseed oil alone with just a small amount of drier. Color can be added to each coat if you so desire.
